    In this one-day workshop students will create a ring with a free spinning, kinetic element in the center. This project will teach tight tolerance fabrication techniques, selective soldering strategies, decorative surface treatment considerations, and proper polishing protocols. Students can expect to walk away with a finished ring and knowledge for future projects.

    Applying the right finish to a piece of jewelry is one of the most important aspects of creating successful work. There are countless ways to finish jewelry, from the flawless mirror finish seen in commercial jewelry, to the matte brushed finish popular with many art jewelers. In this workshop, students will learn industry level tips, tricks, and techniques, while producing several of these finishes on numerous ring blanks. Students are also encouraged to bring in personal work to get feedback and suggestions on how to finish it.

    The focus of this workshop is to use heat to anneal, forge, shape, temper, and harden tool steel. Students will learn to make small tools for chasing, repousse, stamping, texturing, and more. With these tools, everyone will learn methods of bringing a variety of unique texture and visual interest to the surfaces of metal. Every student will leave the class with a set of handmade tools and samples.
