For most metalsmiths the torch is the be-all and end-all in joining metals. However, there are many situations where the application of heat is not appropriate, and many more where the visual stylings of cold connections can create a unique design unmatched by comparatively boring solder seams. In this one-day workshop, students will learn several versatile cold connection techniques: from the three main types of rivets to the mechanical wonder of the tap and die (screws).

Precision pulse arc welding is revolutionizing the jewelry world. The welders utilize an electrode about the size of needle and all of the action happens under a microscope, which allows for precision welds similar to a laser welder. Unlike soldering, welding can happen right next to stones or other heat sensitive materials, making some designs that were previously impossible, and repairs that would have been a nightmare, a quick and easy reality.
