Adobe Illustrator for Jewelers: 2D Design for 3D Jewelry
Is hand drawing and sketching not your cup of tea? Looking for a way to explore planning or designing in your jewelry practice that's less manual and comes with a whole bag of prescribed "tools" to help you get the job done in an efficient yet accurate manner? Look no further than this perfectly suited virtual class that utilizes well known digital software to help you draw, plan, mock-up, and turn your 2D ideas into the 3D jewelry objects you wish to see in the world!
In this virtual workshop, students will be introduced to the tools and features of Adobe Illustrator that can be utilized for numerous digital needs, but in our case, for the planning and creation of jewelry! This 3-session workshop will specifically focus on using Illustrator as an effective tool for freeform drawing, digitally tracing images, creating printable templates for piercing with a saw, and creating files for CNC and laser cutting machines. Between sessions, students will be given exercises for practicing the techniques demonstrated in class.
While experience with Adobe Illustrator is not required for this class, student must be comfortable navigating a computer with reasonable efficiency.
Scholarships are available for this class through the Metalwerx Course Scholarship Program! Learn more and apply here.
Meet the instructor
Andy Lowrie is a jewelry artist who makes sculptural and wearable objects, works on paper and paint-based installations. He is an Australian maker, living and working in the United States. Andy pursues contemporary expressions of jewellery making that interrogate and reflect his life and experiences while drawing on the power of a wearable object to act as an extension of a maker/wearer’s intentions and desires. The potential of process and material as metaphor is a touchstone of his practice, expressed through his experimentation with surface finishes that include paint, powder coat and enamel.
Andy Lowrie Jewellery is his eponymous line of handmade, sterling silver jewelry. His work has been exhibited in Australia, China, Europe and North America, and has been professionally recognised with awards from Brooklyn Metal Works in New York and My-Day By-Day Gallery in Rome. From 2020-2023 he was the inaugural Teach Fellow at the Baltimore Jewelry Center. He is currently an adjunct faculty member at Towson University, Johns Hopkins University and Montgomery College.
