Three Tricks for Making Better Rivets

Making rivets is one of those skills that we all learn early on in our jewelry classes, but somehow, they can still be tricky to get right! Here are 3 simple tips that can help you avoid putting dings in the surface of the piece you are riveting, and make sure the finished rivet is the perfect length for the job.

  1. Ball up one side of the rivet wire before you start and file a flat spot on the ball, removing about 1/2 of the sphere. This will keep the rivet wire in place and prevent it from sliding up when hammering.

  1. Add a piece of thin paper in the middle when you want the riveted pieces to move freely. You can burn off the paper when you are done to release the tension.

  1. Use your finger to guide the hammer when riveting. This will add extra control and reduce the risk of missing and denting the metal next to the rivet.
