Wax Carving for Big and Bold Faceted Stones

This demo-focused virtual class will cover various approaches for hand carving wax prototypes for larger faceted stones and everything a student will need to consider when creating a jewelry design in wax with a larger stone. Class topics will cover design options, structural aspects to securely hold the stone with durability and longevity, the various waxes that are available in the wax working process, tool needs and approaches, and methods for working in a specific aesthetic. The class will conclude with how to finish the newly carved wax model, as well as proper spruing to achieve a high-quality casting. Casting will not be covered in this workshop.

Jim Dailing became passionate about jewelry in college in 1977 after watching a friend skillfully cut an opal. He knew then that he had found his creative outlet. Jim spent the next 10 years furthering his education and gaining experience in a variety of metalsmithing techniques. His enthusiasm and genuine love of the craft is evident in every piece created.
