Stone Setting Intensive

This demo-focused virtual workshop will provide students with the opportunity of honing their stone setting skills as instructor Tim Lazure masterfully leads them through a variety of different types of stone setting techniques including a tube setting, flush setting, handmade prongs, and thick-walled oval bezel setting for faceted stones. We will also cover how to make a tool or two that will assist in the stone setting process. 

Although this workshop is designed for individuals with basic metalsmithing knowledge, such as soldering and fabricating, do not feel intimidated. This workshop will provide a very thorough explanation of stone setting that is suitable enough for even beginners to understand!

Meet the instructor

Timothy Lazure is a Professor in the Metals Design program at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. He received his BFA at Rochester Institute of Technology and his MFA at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. His body of work is diverse in scope - including jewelry, flatware and hollowware, furniture, and sculptural pieces. 

Tim exhibits his jewelry, silversmithing and furniture in national and international exhibitions.  Throughout the years, Tim has taught workshops across the country from Florida to Alaska. He has pieces in the permanent collections of the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in Charlotte, NC, the Gallery of Art and Design in Raleigh, NC, the Enamel Arts Foundation in Los Angeles, CA, and the Racine Art Museum in Racine, WI.

Materials & Tools

A $55 supply kit will be shipped out by the instructor to the default address listed on your Metalwerx account approximately one week prior to class. Please inform us if you reside outside of the US, as your shipping cost will differ and may need to be expedited.

Unless you already own most of the items in the kit, it is highly recommended, as you cannot order the small quantities reflected below through other vendors. Kit includes the following items:

  • 8x6mm oval faceted CZ stone

  • 2” 2.5mm heavy walled tubing

  • 3” 2.5mm heavy walled tubing

  • 8x6mm oval setting

  • 1.75 stone setting bur

  • 2mm stone setting bur

  • 2.75 stone setting bur

  • 3mm stone setting bur

  • 2.5mm bud bur

  • 2mm toothless bur (Tim made)

  • 1 ½” piece of 8 g brass rod

  • 1/12” piece of 3/32nd W1 tool steel

  • 2 engraving handles

  • 1 piece of 24g fine silver 4mm 3”

  • 2 x chasing tool for oval setting - handmade by Tim
