Patinas for the Jeweler's Studio

In this 2-day weekend workshop, students will learn safer, easy-to-use patination methods for metals that utilize accessible items such as kitchen chemicals to produce a wide array of blues, greens, browns, blacks, greys, and reddish tones on most metals.

Application methods and options for control of pattern and surface are will be covered thoroughly. The class will also address dyes, paints, sealing surfaces, and finishing techniques. Japanese approaches, smoked surfaces, immersion, pastes, bound materials, sawdusts, plant resist, flame resists, and more will be discussed. Given the breadth of information, the instructor will address the content and methodology using a compositional system, which will be easy is the theme. Students will experiment with a plethora of samples and are welcome to use the discussed patination methods on jewelry work, should they choose to bring them in.
