Patinas: Color on Metal
Bring the colors of summer to your artwork with patinas and create a unique palette including rich blues, greens and reds. Students will explore both traditional and new patination techniques for copper, bronze, and brass. Techniques include hot and cold immersion, buried, fumed, pastes and paints. Surface preparation, tools, sealants and safety procedures will also be taught. Dabble in the scientific side of metalsmithing and create samples for future reference. If time permits, incorporating patinas into jewelry will be discussed. Wrap up the weekend with samples, recipes, resources, and many ideas for further exploration of these techniques and how they might lead your work in new directions.
Meet the instructor
Lauren Anabela Beaudoin is a Salvadoran born metalsmith, craft educator and sole proprietor of Creative Dexterity. After taking her first metalsmithing class as a teen, Lauren knew this was a passion she wanted to pursue. This led her to the Massachusetts College of Art and Design where she earned her BFA in metals. Working primarily in sterling silver and other copper alloyed metals, her designs investigate shape, depth and kinetic movement. Her latest series explores color and texture through the patination process. Lauren has been featured in Macworld Magazine, Bella Armoire Jewelry and in the book Retrash. She currently resides in Western Massachusetts where she is an active studio artist. Materials & Tools
There is a $45 materials fee for this course which is payable upon registration and includes many various patina solutions, copper, brass and bronze sheet metal, filters for respirators, and various other supplies necessary for these assorted processes.
Students must purchase a respirator if they do not already own one. Metalwerx will be providing the correct filters for use in your respirator, but since these are sized to fit your individual face, we cannot supply the respirators as part of the materials fee. You will need to order your respirator with enough time to try it on for a tight seal and exchange for another size if necessary.
Please buy a 3M Half-Face Respirators, 7500 Series. These can be purchased from Rio Grande.
Students should also bring:
- Notebooks and writing utensils
- Proper dress code (close toed shoes, long pants, work aprons etc.)
- Various size plastic containers with plastic lids
- Please arrive in proper attire for working with chemicals: close toed shoes, long pants, work aprons
