Jewelry Basics: Layers and Textures

Open to all levels! This class teaches students fundamental techniques to make unique layered pieces of jewelry. Those with some experience are also welcome. Explore ways to enhance designs with textured surfaces that can add much needed intrigue and depth to metalwork.

Over two days, students will learn and practice various textures (rolled, hammered, stamped) in combination with cold connections (riveting, wrapping, sewing) and surface finishing techniques (heat patina, liver of sulfur, etc.).

Students can expect to become acquainted with numerous types of texturing methods and tools while creating both samples and finished pieces. Each participants will have the opportunity to work towards their desired jewelry format (pendant, earrings, etc.) with the instructors guidance.

"Creativity has always been my passion, and also a mental retreat since childhood. I create most everything simply for creating sake, but it was very exciting to learn that some other people share my esthetics and appreciate my craftsmanship. It is the most rewarding experience, and I am so grateful be able to call that my career. I started my art with painting, then studied glass, then moved onto jewelry making. I make all my work by hand myself, in a little backyard studio in Massachusetts." - Chihiro Makio
