Jewelry 2

Continue to strengthen the skills you learned in Jewelry 1 in this weekly course. We will focus on building foundational metalsmithing skills like fabrication and soldering; as well as proper use of hand tools, flex shaft, and other specialized tools in the studio.  After creating a series of technique samples, we will begin to design a unique project(s) that incorporate the skills we develop throughout the course.

Add these new techniques to your metalsmithing toolbox:

  • Advance your soldering skills by learning how to solder complex joins, and smaller elements including chain links and earring backs.
  • Tackle hollow forms and learn how to create impactful yet lightweight three-dimensional elements.
  • Take your stone setting skills to the next level by adding tube, prong, and irregular-shaped bezel settings to your repertoire.
  • Learn the finer points of surface textures and treatments by using the rolling mill, hammers, and patinas to add dimensionality and pops of color to your pieces.
  • Flex your finishing skills by learning new ways to utilize the flex shaft accessories, rotary tools, and polishing wheels.

Genevieve is a multimedia artist based in Boston MA, whose practice draws inspiration from an early life rooted in the landscapes of the Pocono mountains and Philadelphia. Fragmented rural landscapes converge with the infrastructure of urban space, they create jewelry and sculpture that invites the viewer to embrace the ‘nostos’ of nostalgia, returning home, perhaps viewing familiarity through another lens. Piecing found objects with metalsmithing, ceramic, handwork, and fiber techniques in metal, Genevieve oscillates between observer and narrator; calling on the visual language of their hometown(s), religious and folk symbolism, collected ephemera, and observations from daily life in Boston to explore themes of environmentalism, community, and identity.
