Intro to Gemology

Intro to Gemology will familiarize students with Gemology, the study of gemstones, including their description, identification, origin, and usage in jewelry and ornamentation.of gemstones. This workshop will teach students how to identify and evaluate commonly used gemstones in the jewelry trade, as well as their origin. The focus will be on commonly found gemstones in jewelry, including apatite, aquamarine, emerald, fluorite, garnet, quartz, ruby, sapphire, tourmaline, and topaz. Identification of artificial gemstones will also be covered, as well as enhancements and treatments for gemstones. Students will also become familiar with gemstone identification tools such as the loupe, dichroscope, polariscope and refractometer, among others.

Upon completion of this workshop, students will be familiar with the most common gemstones in the gem and jewelry trade in terms of name, physical and optical properties. Participants will be able to describe these stone’s internal and external characteristics and identify the mineral.
