Intro to Bracelets: Wire, Links, Sheet

Come roll up your sleeves, to take a good look at your wrist... as we focus on adorning it with a variety of classic bracelet models over a 2-day weekend course! This class will focus on bracelet fabrication using a "cold-work approach" (no heat), by making two basic constructions: a linked  bracelet and (of course!) the ever classic cuff.

Students will learn to explore cold-worked wire techniques with spiral or barrel chain links, develop their small-scale plier forming skills on a bracelet clasp, and hammer their way to a fully formed cuff bracelet! Emily will additionally cover methodologies for accessing wrist anatomy for proper sizing of bracelets, and use of a rolling mill for surface textures and as a 'forming aid'.

Emily joined the Studiomate Artists’ community at Metalwerx in 2015. Since then, she has been enjoying the Metalwerx community, pursuing her quest for skill acquisition in techniques involving metal fabrication of jewelry and small-scale functional objects. Her favorite metalworking techniques include fusing, soldering, and texturing; lately she has been focused on developing skills in the art of filigree. As a life-long rock-hound, she also has a fascination with gems, pearls, and other materials’ potential as adornment for pieces made using classic silversmithing techniques.

In 2020, Emily joined the Virtual Course Team at Metalwerx, and continues to host many of Metalwerx’ virtual classes, working with an incredible line-up of instructors and dedicated students from around the globe. When it comes to Metalwerx, Emily considers herself to always be the luckiest person in the room!

Materials & Tools

There is a $60 materials fee for this course, which is payable upon registration. The kit fee covers Nu-Gold jeweler's brass sheet, 10 feet of sterling silver wire (16g), sawblades, and other miscellaneous items needed for project objectives.

Instructor samples on display in the class will include both silver and base-metal models. Students who anticipate a desire to complete their cuff bracelet in silver should bring this material with them to the workshop; 20 gauge sterling silver would be ideal, in a (minimum) 6 x 1.5 inch strip (or 8 x 1.5 inch strip for large sized cuffs).

Students should bring
  • any of their own metal that they may wish to use in addition to what they get in their kit

  • closed toed shoes - required in the Metalwerx studio

  • any of their own favorite tools - Metalwerx is equipped with communal studio tools

  • pen/pencil and notepad for notes and sketching
