Fusing Comprehensive

Immerse yourself in our cozy studio for a thrilling weekend exploration of metal fusing techniques! Your torch skills will soar as we uncover the remarkable potential of non-ferrous precious metals, which are perfect for fusing chains, rings, small ornamental details, and more! Expand your horizons beyond soldering — aka “brazing” — in this unique course, unearthing new attributes of metal, enriching your understanding of alloys, and honing your skills at the torch station.

Delve into fusing various seams and joints, liberating yourself from cumbersome, and sometimes unnecessary, soldering concerns. Uncover the art of creating captivating textures on sheet stock by skillfully fusing wire or granules. Craft exquisite chain samples by seamlessly fusing jump ring connections. By the end of this comprehensive, you will be able to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of brazing and fusing, choosing the method that best aligns with your creative process or jewelry designs.

Throughout this course, students will pull from a treasure trove of metal alloy options, including fine silver, Argentium, sterling silver, and bronze. Comfort with annealing, brazing (soldering), and safe studio practices is assumed.

Emily joined the Studiomate Artists’ community at Metalwerx in 2015. Since then, she has been enjoying the Metalwerx community, pursuing her quest for skill acquisition in techniques involving metal fabrication of jewelry and small-scale functional objects. Her favorite metalworking techniques include fusing, soldering, and texturing; lately she has been focused on developing skills in the art of filigree. As a life-long rock-hound, she also has a fascination with gems, pearls, and other materials’ potential as adornment for pieces made using classic silversmithing techniques.

In 2020, Emily joined the Virtual Course Team at Metalwerx, and continues to host many of Metalwerx’ virtual classes, working with an incredible line-up of instructors and dedicated students from around the globe. When it comes to Metalwerx, Emily considers herself to always be the luckiest person in the room!
