Exploring Liquid Polymer Clay

Liquid polymer clay is just that, a liquid form of the solid polymer clay you know and love. There are a wide variety of things that you can do with liquid clay when using it in combination with solid polymer. It could be a subtle use like adding a worn patina or finishing edges, to more interesting applications such as stenciling, mark making, and sgraffito techniques.

This virtual workshop explores some of the many techniques the instructor has discovered using liquid polymer. Class will begin with first going over basics such as mixing colors, using raw versus baked clay, and tools for application. The instructor will then step through the techniques, sharing ideas, tools, and some of the super powers of liquid clay that make it so unique. Techniques will include creating backgrounds, using stencils/masks, exploring mark making, and playing with sgraffito. This is a technique-based class where students will create veneers and samples as the class progresses, that can then be used on your special projects.

This is not an intro to polymer course, some familiarity with polymer clay is recommended but not absolutely necessary.

Meet the instructor

Lynn Yuhr’s art is inspired by 2 things: a love of nature and the vivid colors that surround her living in Miami. She uses them as a focal point in her contemporary jewelry, art journals and mixed media endeavors. 

 

 

She loves being creative and is passionate about polymer clay. Exploring possibilities and overcoming obstacles in the construction of a project are her favorite parts of the creative process. Her diverse experiences directly influence her artistic life where she developed a playful yet distinctive style and a strong curiosity that propels her to follow the ‘what ifs’ and try new things.

 

 

 

 

She holds a firm belief that the act of creating something softens one’s heart and opens one’s mind.  With this philosophy, she readily shares her creative techniques and teaches both locally and nationally. Lynn shares her inspiration, polymer experience, travel and other artistics on her studio blog, Flying Squirrel Studio, as well as Instagram (@lynnyuhr). 

 

 

Materials & Tools

The following supplies will be used for course demonstrations and objectives. A suggested item and/or vendor has been provided below for reference. Click the vendor name (in red) to be redirected to a page where you can view the item. The quantities needed for each item are listed first. If ordering, please be aware that some items may come in larger quantities than needed for this class. We recommend not opening an item's packaging until the day of the workshop. Student participation during or in-between class sessions is strongly encouraged but not required - observers are welcome.

Polymer clay (Students will want to have a selection of polymer colors available. To order all or some of these colors go to www.Sculpey.com. Items with an asterisk are required for course objectives.):

  • 2 x 2oz bar of black *
  • 2 x 2oz bar of white *
  • 4 to 6 x 2oz bar of clay in the colors of your choice
  • 2oz to 4oz chopped up scrap clay
  • 1 x bottle of black liquid clay*
  • 1 x bottle of white liquid clay*
  • 1 x set of primary liquid clay - red/yellow/blue *
  • 1 x bottle of Bake and Bond OR translucent liquid clay
  • 1 x bottle of clay softener - the liquid not the solid 
  • additional colors of liquid clay – instructor favorites include peacock pearl, garnet, gold, turquoise translucent

Polymer tools (please ask if substitution will work): 

Other/miscellaneous items:  

  • waxed paper or "deli sheets" 
  • masking tape
  • scissors
  • copier paper
  • cardstock - 1 or 2 sheets
  • cosmetic sponges - a few
  • 6" wooden skewers - a couple for stirring liquid clays
  • cleaner for board and blades (rubbing alcohol, windex, etc.)
  • notebook and writing implements 
  • paper towels or soft cloth
