Dynamic Duo: Hollow Form Signet Ring + Loop-in-Loop Chain Bracelet

Create two classic jewelry pieces with two Metalwerx staff members as your guides, Kaitlyn Evans and Violet Ita! In this weekly course, Kaitlyn will lead students through the construction of a sterling silver hollow-form dome ring, and Violet will teach how to make a fine silver woven chain, also known as loop-in-loop or Roman chain, finished with fabricated end caps and S clasp.

Flat patterns and paper models will be used as templates to aid in planning and determining sizing for rings, as well as endcaps for woven chain. Kaitlyn and Violet will demonstrate how to move sheet metal to the desired forms, fit and solder components together, and fuse and weave jump rings. Throughout the course, particular attention will be paid to torch use and heat control for soldering versus fusing; the hollow-form dome ring teaches students how to fit and solder complex forms with multiple solder seams, while fusing jump rings emphasizes a steady hand and eye, observing changes in the metal, and finesse through repetition.

Students will walk away with their very own classic signet ring and woven chain bracelet, as well as the knowledge and skills to apply the techniques learned in class to future metalsmithing projects!

Forever fascinated by boxes and lockets, Kaitlyn has been fabricating these and other objects since starting her metalsmithing career in 2006. Using traditional metalsmithing techniques, she creates objects that encourage her to share overwhelming emotion, especially when the right words cannot be found. Kaitlyn earned her jewelry and metalsmithing degrees from Millersville University of Pennsylvania and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Through the years she has worked as a gallery manager, adjunct faculty, and workshop instructor at various institutions. She is currently the Program Coordinator at Metalwerx where she also teaches.

Violet Ita is a metalsmith currently residing in Boston, Massachusetts. She was raised in Western Massachusetts and attended a Waldorf School, an alternative education system which fostered her love of craft. Violet graduated from MassArt with a BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing in 2019, and has continued work in the field in various roles, currently as the Business Manager at Metalwerx.
