Chasing and Repoussé Techniques
Chasing and repoussé techniques have been used since ancient times to emboss patterns, textures, and images into sheet metal. Learn to utilize the malleable quality of non-ferrous metals to create high and low relief in copper, bronze and silver. These decorative forming techniques can be applied to jewelry, vessels, and functional objects to add texture and imagery; enhancing any artist's visual vocabulary.
Simple shapes and designs will be provided for each student to try their hand at hammering and learn the basic principles while working on samples. Students will spend the second half of the week creating small pieces of their own design or transforming those samples into finished pieces. Instruction on hammer uses, and some forming and cold forging will also be covered. Avery will discuss resources for buying pitch, tools, and additional materials so that participants can utilize this technique in their own studios.
This course is appropriate for any level student who understands metalworking fundamentals and is interested in learning more about forming. Students need to be comfortable handling a torch.
