Carved Flexible Polymer Bracelet

This class explores the techniques of carving polymer clay after it has been baked to produce dynamic surface design elements using patterns and texture.  All students will first use basic polymer clay working techniques to create and bake a flexible bracelet. Participants will then begin to carve their patterns directly into the baked surface using blades and carving tools. Designs for carving will be informed by both traditional and unconventional tribal and ethnic carvings. Kathleen will discuss ethnic design principles to inspire these creations. Students will also consider form, line, texture, and pattern while developing their ideas for carving. Leave with a beautiful statement piece as well as the skills to work with a familiar material in a brand new way! This workshop is best for students who know how to make Skinner blend and simple canes.

Ceramic artist Kathleen Dustin, M.F.A., has been working with polymer clay since the early 1980s, developing many of her own techniques because it was a material with no history as a fine art or fine craft medium. She is a member and juror of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, the oldest professional craft organization in the United States, and has been a juror for numerous national shows. Kathleen maintains a busy juried show schedule throughout the year and teaches workshops around North America and in Europe.

Materials & Tools

Premo clay will be provided for you courtesy of Polyform Products. Kathleen will provide a small Speedball v-shaped carving blade.

Students should bring

- Pasta machine (motors are acceptable), work surface, tools you normally use including a slicing blade, bone folder, needle tool, #11 blade xacto knife.

- Cyanoacrylate glue in liquid and gel forms (I use Loctite brand because I like the applicators)

- An old washcloth to put over the bracelet in the oven for protection.
