Surface Adornment on Steel

Course Description

About this course

Using mild steel as a base, students will explore methods of altering a steel surface through texture, foil overlay (the damascene technique), and flush-setting. To begin, each participant will make their own tools necessary for the process, including scribes, chasing/texturing tools, chisels, and setting burnishers. Using these tools, the workshop will then focus on techniques for damascene and stone setting - blending layers of texture and materials to build unique compositions. To finish, students will work with laser-cut steel components to set their adorned surface, creating a completed brooch to take home.

This workshop is for anyone interested in working with steel on a small scale. Add great flexibility and self-sufficiency to your studio practice through this unique two day course!
