Perfecting Image Transfers & Champlevé

Course Description

About this course

Press and Peel Blue, originally created for circuit boards and other technological uses, has in recent years been hijacked from the tech field and utilized in a variety of ways throughout the metalsmithing community.  Most commonly, it is used to create a resist on the surface of metal before exposing it to an etching technique, however, it also has enameling applications in the form of decal transfers, resulting in black or brown imagery on the enamel. In this workshop, you will learn how to get consistently crisp results using PnP Blue, after setting up a safe salt water etching bath and discussing the multitude of uses for etched metal, ranging from roll mill embossing to champlevé enameling. You will leave the workshop with new tools in your toolbox for design, imagery, and color application.

Students Should Bring:

  • digital file with an 8.5x11 inch surface filled with high contrast black and white graphics to be printed on PnP Blue
    • Students should size their images before class to the desired scale and quantity, however Metalwerx can help if you'd like assistance.
    • (NOTE: an email must be sent to requesting help at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the class). Each student will receive one sheet of PnP Blue, so the more images you can fit on a page (just like cutting out sugar cookies) — the more enameling content you will have to work with.
