Moscow Mule Cups

Looking to form your own bar ware for your next social gathering? In this workshop, students will make a Moscow Mule cup out of copper sheet and a whole lot of hammering. Utilizing the technique of angle raising, students will control how metal moves and form a unique cup design through repetitive hammering.

Attention will be placed on the design and execution of the foot and rim of the cup as well as texturing, finishing, and polishing. Instruction in soldering and binding wire methods will be covered for how to attach handles. Additionally, Adam will share resources for companies who provide plating and tinning services for students who may be interested in having their cup lined with tin or silver plated after class.

Adam Whitney is a Metalsmith who focuses on raising along with chasing and repousse. These traditional silversmithing techniques allow Adam to form flat sheet metal into seamless dimensional sculptures and hollowware. Adam enjoys exploring the possibilities of his craft and finds inspiration in historical and ancient metalwork. His studio is currently located at Penland School of Crafts where he is a Resident Artist until 2023. When not in his studio Adam travels for various projects and to teach workshops, bringing his passion for metalsmithing to wherever he goes. Adam received his BFA in Crafts / Materials Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University where he concentrated in metalsmithing. He has worked as a bench jeweler,  studio coordinator, taught Jewelry Design at Raffles College in Kuala Lumpur, and is currently a full time studio artist.
