Intro to Forming

Learn the proper way to use a hammer so that you can quickly move metal to create volume. Forming sheet metal gives a piece more character, dimension, and adds a new level of interest to many designs.

Over the course of a day, students will make simple examples in NuGold (bronze colored sheet metal). Sample projects may include a bead, earrings or bracelet -- and maybe more than one piece as time allows and depending on their complexity.

This is a process driven class, but time permitting, we will be able to work towards a finished piece.

Basic metalsmithing skills are preferred but not required. This is a quick introduction to several very important forming techniques used in metalsmithing.

She has continued to expand her skills and artistic horizons in her studio in Woburn, Massachusetts, and also in advanced jewelry and silversmithing classes at the DeCordova Museum School in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Diane favorite techniques include fabricating mokume, pave settings, raising, hot twisting, and soldered applique.

Materials & Tools

A $20 materials fee that includes NuGold sheet metal for a bracelet and bead project is payable upon registration.

If students would like to work in silver, they are welcome to bring their own metal, but it is recommended that all beginners start in the NuGold provided in the materials kit.

There are plenty of hammers at Metalwerx to use, but we will have a few hammers available for purchase if students would like to get one: LH1 hammer from Allcraft (estimated at $55).

Students should bring
  • Well fitted work gloves or an old pair of dress gloves. Metalwerx has some but you may prefer your own.
  • Safety glasses/Ear protection. Metalwerx has some but you may prefer your own.
  • Bring any forming hammers that you may already have. Metalwerx has plenty to share.
