About this course

The workshop will walk through introductory forging techniques to create a custom set of copper/silver chopsticks. We will practice how to taper, texture, and solder to create your personalized set of chopsticks to use at home. Time to heat up your metal and start hammering on the anvil. No experience necessary.

Meet the Instructor

Patrick McMillan

Patrick McMillan is the jeweler and metalsmith behind McMillan Metal. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University and his Masters of Arts from the Birmingham School of Jewellery in England. With over 15 years of experience in the field, he has worked for a number of companies and small businesses as a production jeweler, blacksmith, stone setter, and in metalwork repair.  

Since 2009, Patrick has resided in Rhode Island and has spent his time building up his personal studio practice and teaching jewelry and metalsmithing at School One High School and The Steel Yard in Providence. Patrick owns and operates The Bench in Pawtucket, RI, a creative studio space for jewelers and metalsmiths providing access to tools and equipment with affordable workspace. 

Materials & Tools 

There is a $40 materials fee for this workshop that is payable upon registration. The materials kit includes 18" of copper rod and 4" of sterling silver rod for the tips of the chopsticks. 

Students should bring 
  • Students should bring a sketchbook, pencil(s) and eraser for designing drawing.
