BROOCHing the Subject: Pin design and Fabrication
This three-day workshop will act as an introduction to the vast topic of pin and brooch design and making. Morning demos will take up the first part of class and then each student will have time to work on their projects with guidance throughout the afternoon. Techniques covered include:
Day one: All things not soldered. The fibula, safety pin and cold connected pin. Techniques include: plier-forming and hammered wire, pierced sheet, wire wrapping, and found object use.
Day two: Fabrication ideas for unusual stones and found objects. Styles of pin attachments and soldering tips. How to make a brooch that converts to a pendant. Using narrative as a design concept. Discussion about imagery, body as viewing space, efficient design and stone setting.
Day three: Morning will be for individual instruction time on student specific projects and needs, soldering tips and tricks, open studio time to finish work, afternoon roundtable/critique, studio clean-up.
Meet the instructor
Paulette Werger is a metalsmith and teacher who works in Lebanon, NH. She sells her work both nationally and internationally and is owner of Metalpeople East, a jewelry and hollow ware studio. She has taught metalsmithing at the University of WI, Montana State University, and at craft schools throughout the country.
Materials & Tools
Materials will be available for purchase at the class, but students can bring their own metal that they wish to work with. Paulette also will bring a variety of hand tools, dowels, flex shaft tools, stones pearls and found objects to use in class.
- It's helpful to have a sketchbook to keep track of notes and ideas.
- Basic jewelry hand tools (including sanding sticks, saw blades, files, pliers, dowels, wire snips, etc.)
